Sept. 13-16: Krakow by Jeff

Yes, this is my view above my pillow going to bed and waking up in our really cool house in Krakow.  Not sure his name but we’ll just refer to him as “Horny”.
“Horny” the plastic stag lamp

We arrived in Krakow on 9/13 for three days.  Compared to Berlin’s setting, Krakow felt much more intimate.  Great food, cheap beer, and easy to get around on foot..  Blessed with beautiful weather on Friday,  we walked (and I ran) most of the older part of the city.
Where can I get Miloslaw in Lafayette?
Obwarzanek krakowski (round pretzel/bagely things)
Market Square, Old Town Krakow
A piece of Baltic amber for Mick and a pendant for Cathy
The very ornate St. Mary’s Church, Old Town Krakow
The beautiful Wawel Church in Wawel Castle, Krakow
The Augusta Restaurant & Cocktail Bar
Storm clouds over the Vistula River at the end of a sunny day
Saturday, our last day in Krakow, was more of a sobering experience, touring Auschwitz, and will be described more in a later post by Mick. I toured Dachau back in 1977 but this really, really gives more of a step-by-step picture of the synchronized annihilation of the Poles, Jews, gypsies, Russian POW’s and many more. At its height, 10,000 people were murdered each day. What constantly goes through my mind is how many people it took to administer such a heinous process and how many of these people actually paid a price for these unforgivable acts.
Entrance to Auschwitz II – Birkenau – Death Camp
A reminder that individuals, each with a life and a family, made up the millions exterminated
Where Rudolf Hoess was hung in 1947 – next to the gas chambers where he sent a million+ to their deaths while living steps away in a home with his wife and five children
We’re now on board an extremely comfortable FlixBus to Ostrava (some of us are more comfortable than others) where we’ll pick up a train to our next destination, Prague.

  1. I appreciate your sharing not just the beautiful sights and fun times, but also the painful reminders of history. I can’t believe you guys spotted that star on the bus through the hole in the Wall.
